When you’re three, piling up blocks seems as natural as breathing – surely that’s why construction toys have been popular with children since ‘childhood’ was invented circa 1814?

Piling up really complicated blocks into really big piles is just as much fun and what’s more, it turns out that it’s actually a job, and people are prepared to pay you to do it!

My name’s James Thomson and I’m a structural engineer who’s also interested in design, art, community, society and architecture. The Paper Project is a great way to combine all of the above.

I work for Buro Happold, a building consultancy who, amongst other things, design quite extraordinary structures.
