This summer, in Birmingham, the exhibition ‘Sustainable Habitation’ will be created in the centre of the city to demonstrate that low energy waste materials like returned newspapers can transcend their basic properties and become highly functional. Significantly, it is the application of engineering skill, knowledge and ingenuity which makes this possible.

Without the ingenuity and skill of engineers in all disciplines, securing a low energy future for a growing population is an impossible task.

I am leading the working group behind the project from the Graduates and Students Committee of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Over the last three months we have gathered enthusiastic support from Birmingham City Council, the Guardian, the Birmingham Post newspaper, The Custard Factory arts complex, the main committee of the ICE West Midlands and numerous structural and civil engineering companies in the city.
