Today has been extraordinary, I’ve spent the day at the inaugural Paper Project construction day. Four engineers, 8 hours, a lot of newspapers and this mighty enterprise at the end:

8 hours design and build time...

8 hours design and build time...

The original intention of building a cantilever had to be revised when we realised the stresses involved. In an arch, the stresses in the struts are about 10% of those in a cantilever, for the same span. In this case about 3.4 metres. The original intention was all about spectacle and firing public imagination – so bigger is definitely better. The arch allows us to build bigger – so out goes the cantilever.

I’m exhausted, and off to bed, but for a first attempt I’m incredibly proud of what the four of us achieved. Roll on June.
